Manchester City have been expected to sign at least one central defender this summer, and Nathan Ake is reportedly on the verge of a move to the Premier League club.

There’s uncertainty whether the Bournemouth player will be the only recruit in central defence, and a lot may depend on whether City see any exits. They won’t want to see the back of Eric Garcia, who has repeatedly been linked with a return to Barcelona, but would likely consider offers for a couple of others.

Kalidou Koulibaly’s name has been linked repeatedly with Pep Guardiola’s side, and the hope from some Manchester City fans is that the Napoli player will follow Ake to the Etihad.

However, Naples journalist Antonio Giordano has dismissed the idea of anything going on right now in that regard. Quoted by AreaNapoli, he said: “What is true in the rumours about Kalidou Koulibaly to Manchester City? There is nothing true for now. We have surveys on the side, but the British have taken Ake.”

The latter part of his quote likely relates to intermediaries asking Napoli about a potential deal for Koulibaly, so they can then build a deal and propose it to clubs like City.

Napoli have long been holding out for €100m for their defender, although it’s likely they’ll have to come down from that for a deal to happen.
