During the World Cup group stage, when Uruguay beat Ghana 2-0, we saw Giorgian de Arrascaeta being linked to Tottenham Hotspur and a couple of other Premier League sides.

The Flamengo midfielder scored two goals in that game, and rumours in the English press suddenly started claiming clubs were interested in him.

With Arrascaeta already being 28 and still playing in South America, that didn’t seem like the type of signing Tottenham would make, but the whole thing still made some noise in the Brazilian media.

That’s why when interviewed on Friday, Flamengo vice-president Marcos Braz was asked about the midfielder’s situation. He made it clear that the Uruguayan is safe at the club, insisting there have been no approaches from European sides so far.

“Absolutely nothing has arrived. Arrascaeta has a four-year contract with us, he renewed it at the beginning of the year, we are very happy with him,” Marcos Braz told Paparazzi Rubro-Negro (via Netfla).

“He’s an exceptional player and person. We’ve had a long journey to renew him, but that’s already behind us. So far, we’ve had absolutely nothing. It’s not a concern of Flamengo. The release clause is very high, we don’t want to sell Arrascaeta and we never had a proposal.”

Arrascaeta just had another great season for Flamengo, with 15 goals and 20 assists, and they won another Copa Libertadores title.

The midfielder has been in great form in South America in the past few years, and there’s a little feeling that Tottenham and other European sides should have taken him to Europe long ago.
