Earlier today we covered claims from RMC and L’Equipe about Liverpool efforts to sign Duje Ćaleta-Car from Marseille today.

It was stated the defender had even travelled to the airport on Sunday, where he waited for updates on negotiations between the two.

L’Equipe reported Liverpool had made an offer for the player, although they didn’t share the level of that bid. They presented the player as being keen on the move, ready to fly to Manchester to then travel on to Liverpool.

However, Marseille refused believing it was too late in the window for them to find a replacement, and L’Equipe said that decision was one ‘which should not change today’.

That should have been that, but now there’s been a little hope presented.

Nabil Djellit, who works for France Football, now says the move is ‘not totally dead’ and negotiations are ongoing. Liverpool will have to work quickly if they’re to complete this one, and they have a couple of things on their side.

Marseille need money, and manager Andre Villas-Boas is leaving at the end of the season anyway so there’s no great worry about upsetting him. What they do have to worry is a possible further backlash from fans.
