With Manchester United spending big on signing André Onana from Inter Milan and him not doing great in his first months at Old Trafford, it’s been a situation for the Italian media to repeatedly discuss.

The latest comments in the local press come from TuttoMercatoWeb, who held an interview with Cameroon legend Patrick Mboma.

As the outlet asked the former player how he sees Onana, who only stayed at Inter Milan for one year, he claimed that Manchester United may not have been the right choice for his compatriot.

“Onana is a great goalkeeper, he has few faults. Let’s say that high exits are his weakness, but he has many talents. With his feet he is not poor, we all know that,” Mboma told TuttoMercatoWeb.

“If you take him for 0 and sell him a year later for 50, it’s a very interesting thing. But the question is another: did Onana make the right choice? In my opinion on a sporting level going from Inter to Manchester United is not a sporting growth.”

Since his arrival at Manchester United this summer, Onana has made 12 appearances, keeping only three clean sheets and conceding 20 goals. The criticism, though, was never only because of numbers, but actually for the shots he could have saved.

However, Mboma’s comments are on the Red Devils’ form, and he may not be wrong about that either. Erik ten Hag’s side currently stand in 8th in the Premier League and are at the bottom of their group in the Champions League.
