People in Belgium don’t seem very happy with the form shown by Youri Tielemans at the national team.

With the Aston Villa star getting substituted in the game against Azerbaijan at the weekend, the local media is now questioning his small impact in the team.

Outlet Voetbal Primeur today features some words written by Niels Poissonier in Het Laatste Nieuws. His text starts by claiming that Tielemans couldn’t meet the expectations that used to surround him, and failed to reach the level that other Belgian players have shown in the past few years.

“Three years later, we have to conclude that Tielemans is no longer at home in that final round, the European Championship, the World Cup or now. He cannot carry the national team – as De Bruyne often does, Eden regularly did and Fellaini did in his famous way” writes Poissonier.

The pundit then concludes by mentioning that Tielemans hasn’t been able to impress at Aston Villa either.

“Tielemans, at 26, does not appear to be the Belgians’ hoped-for midfield leader. A bench player at… Aston Villa. There’s a reason for that. Unai Emery is nevertheless a lover of technically gifted footballers.”

Belgium are now playing Estonia, and even though the Red Devils are on top of Group F, there will certainly be some attention on Tielemans’ performance.

Since joining Aston Villa as a free agent this summer, the midfielder has played in all of their matches, but is still to get a starting place in the squad in the Premier League, getting a total of 206 minutes in six appearances so far.
