During the January transfer window, many of the claims of Newcastle United interest in big name players came with a caveat… they could get relegated from the Premier League.

Eddie Howe’s side now find themselves nine points clear of the drop zone, and the prospect of Championship football doesn’t look a realistic thing at this stage.

That means they can return for January targets, at least according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Italian newspaper say the ‘serenity’ at Newcastle, with regards to their Premier League survival, can ‘lead to an assault’, or another one, for Victor Osimhen.

Over the past few months the Magpies have been the English club most linked with the Napoli star. Whilst others, such as Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Manchester United, have been dragged in, it’s Newcastle thought to be the most serious.

Gazzetta say the club ‘probed’ an Osimhen signing in January, but their status at the time meant things didn’t go anywhere.

The report explains Napoli are being logical and have decided there’s ‘no door barred if someone comes up with a proposal of 80 million plus bonuses’.

That seems to be a slight softening, after some other reports talked of €100m+ being needed for the attacker. Gazzetta also explain that potential replacements are being identified.
