Newcastle United may want to step up their efforts for Atalanta’s Ederson, as he may be unattainable by the summer.

That’s according to Calciomercato, who cover the player today and how the Italian side may be able to protect themselves from losing him.

They explain that Teun Koopmeiners looks likely to leave at some point in the summer, with him currently too expensive for his suitors now but that set to change.

Juventus are particularly keen and if they offer the €40m needed, he will go and that will be Atalanta’s ‘only expendable big player’ in that market. In other words, they won’t need to sell anyone else.

Therefore, Ederson would be ‘armoured’ despite the interest and ‘ready off’ from Newcastle and also Tottenham.

The Magpies have been linked for most of this month and their head of scouting Steve Nickson even travelled to Bergamo recently to make contact about the player.

That was backed up the following day by reports in Brazil before more reports making it clear that Newcastle are tussling with Tottenham for his signature.

Now, though, it appears they need to worry that Atalanta have plans in place that would allow them to avoid having to sell Ederson in the summer. Indeed, the belief is that they could rebuff anything Newcastle would be able to offer.

There’s something of a cloud gathering around the player, with the pursuit looking increasingly difficult, even despite that initial contact, if they can’t get it done this month.
