At the end of last month, Foot Mercato reported that Newcastle United are preparing an offer to sign Jordan Veretout in the winter market.

The midfielder has been an ‘indisputable starter’ for AS Roma and has managed four goals and eight assists in 26 matches in all competitions this season.

His performances for the Serie A side, coupled with his contract situation, caught the attention of the Magpies.

The 28-year-old’s current deal will run down in 2024 and there has been no progress in terms of a renewal, with the Italian club hesitant to offer him a pay rise.

That’s according to Calciomercato, who add the former Aston Villa man’s performances have been ‘worsening’ since José Mourinho arrived in the Italian capital last summer. He earns €2.5m per year, after tax, and the Giallorossi have ‘no intention’ to offer an improved deal.

It’s claimed ‘there is a risk of divorce’ between Roma and Veretout next June, considering that English clubs, like Eddie Howe’s side, are ‘interested in the midfielder’.

Newcastle are the only club mentioned, and the headline states the player ‘risks being sold’.

Veretout will drop further down the pecking order with the impending arrival of Sergio Oliveira from FC Porto. The Portuguese midfielder is already in Rome and is going through his medical tests today.

Therefore, a move could help Newcastle add a midfielder, give Veretout the prominence and salary he wants, and provide some income for Roma.
