Former Newcastle United striker Xisco Jiménez has just recently retired from football, at the age of 37.
The Spaniard, who belonged to the Magpies for four and a half years between 2008 and January 2013, had been playing for Atletico Baleares, and now decided to stop playing in the middle of the season.
Xisco is today quoted by Spanish newspaper Ultima Hora speaking about the end of his career. He had an emotional farewell, and at no time was there a mention of Newcastle.
“It was at Dépor that I made my debut in the First Division and scored my first goals, fulfilling the dream of any player. The most gratifying moments were the promotions with Córdoba and Osasuna, where from the first moment I felt very identified with the philosophy of the club and we formed a big family,” said Xisco.
Speaking of Mallorca, he said: “The pity has been that due to injuries and other issues I have not been able to contribute as much as I would have liked to the team”.
Newcastle spent €5.68m to sign Xisco from Deportivo La Coruña back in 2008. Despite staying in St. James’ Park for one season, he was then sent on a loan to Racing Santander.
It was only in January 2013 that Newcastle decided to bid farewell to him, with him leaving the club with one goal and one assist in 11 measly appearances.
Xisco then played for Cordoba, Mallorca, Muangthong United, Osasuna, Peñarol, Alcorcón and finally Atletico Baleares, where he has now retired.
