Newcastle United’s potential take over by a Saudi backed group has seen the club linked with many players around Europe. Some of the claims have been over the top, because even if the Magpies get a big cash injection, they’ll still have to comply with FFP rules.
Spending €50m plus a time on players from clubs such as Barcelona and Real Madrid makes a dramatic story, yet probably isn’t realistic at this stage. There’s also the challenge of attracting players.
On Monday afternoon, Bild present an option which could be likelier. The German newspaper claims Newcastle have Wout Weghorst at ‘the top of their wish-list’ for the summer window.
Bild believe that Wolfsburg would go weak if they received an offer of €35m or over, and it’s stated such a fee is ‘not a problem’ for Newcastle, given the expected investment.
The story points out that six months ago, Weghorst hinted to Bild that he’d quite fancy a move to the Premier League at some stage. Arsenal are also said to be keen on the 27 year old, who has scored 16 Bundesliga goals this season, and a further four across the DFB-Pokal and Europa League.
