Manchester United were actively negotiating a €100m deal for Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic in the January transfer window.

That’s according to AS, who say the deal was ‘practically closed’ before the player and his agent stopped the move from happening.

The Spanish newspaper cover the player today amid Real Madrid’s efforts to find a striker to supplement their forward line this summer.

They want a player to ‘act as a hinge’ between Karim Benzema and their next big star signing, either Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland.

They have not stopped monitoring the market on that front and Juventus striker Vlahovic is one of the players that they are looking at.

Indeed, he is one of the ‘most popular names’ currently being handled but Madrid know there could be potential competition from Manchester United.

That’s because Juventus put the striker on the market in the January transfer window and according to AS’s information, ‘were negotiating his sale’ with Manchester United for €100m.

Everything on that deal ‘was practically closed’ and ready to be announced but the player and his agent stopped the operation at the last minute.

Why that is the case isn’t mentioned but the hint is he did it knowing that Madrid would come calling in the summer, particularly as relations between Juve and Madrid are ‘great’ and thus could ‘facilitate the operation’.

With Manchester United still on the hunt for a new striker, though, there’s every chance they could revive their interest in the Serbian, after seemingly being close to getting him earlier this year.
