Similar to what happened at Arsenal, it seems that Fenerbahce ostracising Mesut Ozil hasn’t convinced the player to consider an exit.
Last week, the Turkish side released a statement claiming that due to an internal coaching decision, the star would be removed from their squad, a situation he’s seen at Arsenal too.
That seemed like a sign that Ozil could leave the club in the summer transfer window. However, in statements made by his agent Erkut Sogut, carried by Fanatik, it’s now claimed the midfielder wants to fulfil his contract.
“Usually, such incidents are always sad. An unpleasant process has started for both sides. The important thing is to stay calm and see the final decision in such times. I say this clearly here. Mesut will not go anywhere, nor does he plan to go anywhere,” said Sogut.
“Two years until the end of his contract. He will continue here as a Fenerbahce player. He signed for 3.5 years, six months of which he played for free. From January to the end of the season, he didn’t even make any money. He emphasised his love for Fenerbahce by saying ‘it doesn’t matter’. Ambitious, wants to play, has high feelings.”
It turns out this situation doesn’t sound very different from the one he had in his final years at Arsenal. Despite the good first seasons he had with the Gunners, the player insisted on staying in London until even after the situation became unsustainable.
In the 2019/20 season, Ozil only made 23 appearances for the Gunners. There was big expectation about him leaving the club the following summer, and that didn’t happen, with him staying for six more months without a single minute played for Mikel Arteta’s side.
So with just a few months left on his Arsenal contract, in January 2021 he agreed his move to Fenerbahce.
Now with him insisting on staying at the Turkish side, it seems the 33-year-old won’t have his departure forced there either.
