Bristol City manager Lee Johnston is pleased the club yesterday secured the services of Swedish defender Joel Ekstrand, after the defender was released by Watford this summer. The 27-year-old was close to joining Leeds United, but the deal fell through because they were concerned about a serious knee injury he sustained 16 months ago.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Johnston believes they’ve signed an excellent player, who comes with plenty of experience playing in the Championship. The Bristol City boss revealed they’ve assessed an old injury Ekstand had, and after a five-week trial with the club they are confident this won’t be a problem.

“Joel is a top player, full of Sky Bet Championship experience. We have had him in training with us and have assessed his old injury. Myself and my staff are confident he will be an excellent signing for the club,” said Johnston.

During the window there were reports Ekstand was on the verge of joining Leeds United, but there were concerns over the fitness of the defender. Leeds United subsequently pulled out of a deal to sign the player, and instead brought in his compatriot Pontus Jansson, on loan from Torino.
