Manchester United keep following Gelson Martins, according to reports from the Portuguese press.
The Red Devils were the only club who sent scouts to Sporting’s away match against Nacional last Friday, as reported by Portuguese newspapers O Jogo and A Bola.
The difference between the articles is that A Bola claims that United were there especially to watch Martins, who they’ve scouted more than ten times this year.
The 21-year-old had a decent match, with good tactical work, but failed to make the difference as Sporting ended up settling for a 0-0 draw.
With seven assists and two goals, Gelson Martins is having a fantastic start to the season, even though no one really expected that.
His good performance against Real Madrid is what brought all the attention to him, and since then he started being linked to big clubs, with Manchester United included.
The winger has a €60m release clause, and as Sporting like to keep their traditions, he wouldn’t leave the club for much less than that.
Gelson Martins is primarily a right winger but can also play as a second striker. A Bola may say they know Manchester United are specifically watching him, but in reality it may be more of an educated guess.
What can’t be argued against is Manchester United’s obvious interest in recruiting again from the Portuguese market. Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Marcos Rojo all arrived from Sporting, and earlier this year the club unsuccessfully tried to sign Renato Sanches from Benfica.
