Manchester City star Rodri has admitted it will be “impossible” for them to catch Arsenal in the title race if the Gunners maintain the form they’ve shown in the first half of the season.

Arsenal currently sit top of the Premier League table after 20 games, having lost just two games all season and won 16.

Manchester City sit five points behind them in second as their closest challengers but could see that gap increased to eight if Arsenal win their game in hand.

Pep Guardiola’s side are currently struggling to keep up with the pace set by Mikel Arteta and his men and missed their opportunity to close the gap to two points over the weekend by falling to defeat to Tottenham.

They had been presented with their chance after Arsenal’s defeat to Everton at Goodison Park but put in a poor performance against Spurs, who ran out 1-0 winners thanks to Harry Kane’s record breaking strike.

That result was the latest in a series of disappointing ones for Manchester City this season, who have found themselves beset by problems on and off the pitch.

Arsenal have taken advantage of that, and Liverpool’s uncharacteristic slide down the table, to race ahead in the title race and Rodri admits that if they maintain their current pace, he and his teammates won’t be catching them.

“Every year it’s more complicated, the level of this league is tremendous and you have to win it with almost 90-odd points,” he told DAZN, relayed by Notimerica.

“We are calm, we know that there is a lot left and we are going in the right direction (…) It is true that Arsenal have had an impressive first half of the season.

“Obviously, if they maintain that level and are capable of doing the same in the second half, it will be impossible.”
