In dire need of a defensive minded midfielder who can also pass the ball, Manchester United have reportedly turned their attention to Marcelo Brozovic.

That’s a story that’s been in the rumour mill for quite some time now, and while the Red Devils cannot make a contract offer to the player until January, they certainly have asked questions to those close to him.

That’s what Tuttosport are reporting on Friday, claiming there is a long queue of clubs who have ‘informed themselves with his entourage’, meaning they will have wanted to know what his demands will be going forward.

Those are published in the article, with the newspaper explaining he wants €7.5m/year from Inter, who are now prepared to go as far as €6.5m with bonuses included.

They do, however, point out that ‘it’s possible that someone has offered the player a wage of €8m’, although they don’t say who.

That’s something Manchester United would certainly be capable of doing, knowing full well they would have to compensate any lack of transfer fee with a higher salary and a hefty signing on fee, thus still flexing their financial muscles to ensure a signing.

It might be they’ll need to go even higher than that, because Brozovic made it clear on Thursday that his first port of call would be a stay with the Serie A side.

Only a failure to find a renewal agreement would push him to look elsewhere, and we aren’t there yet.

Time is of the essence, but Manchester United are somewhat helpless at the moment, clearly having to wait and see how the talks between Brozovic and Inter pan out first before stepping forward in January if they are still in a position to do so.
