Xherdan Shaqiri has struggled for regular playing time at Liverpool and has asked the Reds to let him leave Anfield this summer.
Last month, the winger gave an interview to Corriere dello Sport, where he revealed he’d informed the Merseyside club about his wish to change clubs.
The 29-year-old, who represented Switzerland at the Euros, has opened the door to joining Lazio in the ongoing window.
Stéphane Henchoz, who played for Liverpool from 1999 to 2005, told Blick that Shaqiri’s interview with the Italian newspaper makes it clear he wants out of the Premier League side and also backed his compatriot’s decision to leave the club.
“Shaqiri is an outstanding player, he has shown that many times. At Liverpool, however, the competition is simply too great,” Henchoz said.
“After this excellent Euro 2020, he would like to be a regular at a club. That is why he has now sent a clear signal to Liverpool with these clear words.”
The former defender is of the belief Shaqiri’s exit will not have a huge impact on Jürgen Klopp’s side and further backed him to join Lazio in the final weeks of the window.
Liverpool are asking around €10m for the wideman and according to Blick, this is a ‘bargain for a player like Shaqiri’.
