Liverpool have ‘enquired’ about a move for Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard this summer, with the Frenchman looking to leave the German giants.
That’s according to Kicker and L’Equipe, who both cover the 27-year-old’s future today ahead of a possible departure from the Allianz Arena.
Kicker cover reports that Pavard has informed Bayern he does not want to extend his contract at the club, which expires in 2024, and so will likely be leaving the club this summer as a result.
He was already toying with a change in the January transfer window and has now made his mind up to leave as he is looking for a new challenge in another European league.
He knows he has suitors in Europe, with Inter Milan already making a move in January and Barcelona also a potential buyer.
That follows a similar report from the newspaper last week in which also stated that Liverpool had shown an interest in him.
L’Equipe, meanwhile, say that Pavard does categorically want to leave Bayern Munich and has expressed that wish to the club’s management.
His agents have already met to discuss a departure and even a change in the upper management will not convince the defender to stay where he is. Further discussions about a transfer are set to take place soon on that front.
A key factor in determining his next club will be whether they will play him as a central defender or not, with that having been a major problem for him at Bayern.
He wants to play there rather than at full-back moving forwards and any club that can guarantee that is likely to be high up his list.
Whether that includes Liverpool, who L’Equipe do not name as a potential destination, remains to be seen but central defence has been an issue for them this year and a World Cup winner with the experience of Pavard, who could also be available for a low price, could fix that.
