Colombia’s two defeats in the international break have put them in a very delicate position, as they’re now practically out of the 2022 World Cup.
Liverpool’s new signing Luis Diaz was one of the big hopes for the matches against Peru and Argentina, and with disappointing results, he left the last game in tears.
So there’s of course some anger around Colombia’s national team, and even a former Argentina manager has been sending heavy criticism towards their squad.
Alfio Basile, who trained several big clubs in Argentina, including the national team, spoke to Radio Cooperativa about the situation, and ended up firing shots at Luis Diaz and his €45m transfer to Liverpool.
“That Diaz who Liverpool bought… I didn’t see him do anything against Peru or Argentina. Why did Liverpool buy Diaz?” asked Basile (via Caracol).
With the likes of Juan Cuadrado, Davinson Sanchez, Yerry Mina, Luis Diaz, James Rodriguez and Falcao Garcia, Colombia were indeed expected to do much better in the World Cup qualifiers.
The Cafeteros, however, are now placed in 7th position with two fixtures left. There are currently Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador and Uruguay getting a straight spot in the competition, with Peru going to the playoff, while Chile and Colombia dream of stealing a place.
