It’s been a few days, but Leicester City links with Francesco Acerbi have reemerged in Italy. The 28 year old is a left footed central defender, and his contract with Sassuolo ends in June 2018.
Calciomercato.it claim on Thursday that Leicester City interest in the player ‘continues to be real’, and they reckon a €7m offer has already been made. However, Sassuolo’s determination not to sell the player has been communicated to the website.
As we’ve stated before, this rumour could well have been born out of a perfect player marketing opportunity. Towards the end of last year, Leicester City sent a scout to watch a match between Fiorentina and Sassuolo and following that the Premier League champions were linked with several players from both Italian clubs.
Turning 29 next month, Acerbi will be 30 years of age when his current Sassuolo contract comes to an end. It would be no surprise if he’d like some more security, whether that be with his current club or elsewhere.
If Sassuolo are so adamant they won’t sell to Leicester City, or anyone else, then perhaps they should offer their player a new deal.
