Denmark are going though a very difficult period with their national team. World Cup qualification feels like it’s only just started, but unless Denmark manage to turn things around dramatically then it looks likely to be fruitless.

Losses to Poland and, more importantly, Montenegro, sees Denmark 4 points behind each country and whilst that can be changed over the course of one international break, Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen said last night they’d likely have to win all seven games remaining to qualify.

There’s some great young talent in the squad, but Danish newspaper BT point out this morning that there’s not enough fight. Brian Laudrup has told BT that after the match against Poland it was a worry that the team didn’t have a leader to drag them out of trouble.

BT points out that Denmark created a multitude of chances, but didn’t have anyone to put the ball in the back of the net. Step forward Nottingham Forest’s Nicklas Bendtner.

Laudrup said: “He has not yet shown enough to be accepted back, I think. He has to earn it, and if he does it, I cannot imagine anything other than that Hareide (Denmark’s manager) saying yes.”

There’s a carrot hanging for the Nottingham Forest striker to smash the goals in for his club, and then become a national hero, a redemption. That kind of motivation can’t be bad for Forest.
