Leeds United and Southampton were two of the Premier League clubs who made efforts to sign PSV star Cody Gakpo in the summer window. Both clubs were said to be interested in taking him from the Eredivisie side, but neither managed to make a convincing offer.

The Dutch club proved to be right in making an effort to keep the winger, as he continues to have an impressive form, with nine goals and six assists in 12 appearances this season.

Now as the local media comments on his form and what he could add to the national team, it’s claimed that Leeds and Southampton could’ve been wrong moves for him.

Former Oranje winger René van de Kerkhof spoke to Voetbal International (via Voetbal Primeur), mostly commenting on how Louis van Gaal’s side should do at the World Cup. And when talking about Gakpo, he claimed the PSV star could be a star of the tournament.

“But without being silly, I think he will be the revelation of the World Cup. He can play football so well, he always plays well against top teams. I see him excelling at the World Cup and become the surprise of the tournament.”

Then he claimed that instead of moving to the Premier League, Gakpo should actually open his eyes to other countries which may better suit his football.

“This summer there weren’t really any clubs that suit him. Leeds United, Southampton… I don’t disdain those clubs, but Gakpo can do more. I don’t think England really suits him anyway, Spain or Italy are more obvious.”
