David Wagner was the man of the moment in Germany on Monday, with Bild getting very excited about him taking over at Wolfsburg. The German newspaper presented Wagner’s Huddersfield exit and arrival at Wolfsburg as a sure thing, and explained it could even be official before the end of the week.

As we explained on Monday, Bild are always quite excitable, and whilst that doesn’t mean they don’t get big scoops, it’s worth checking some calmer German reporting too.

Regional newspaper Wolfsburger Allegmeine, better known as WAZ, is a good place to start, and they calmed things down on Monday afternoon, saying the claims of an agreed switch were ‘somewhat premature’.

Final talks are set to be held on Wednesday, and David Wagner hasn’t yet agreed to leave Huddersfield and take over at Wolfsburg.

Further reporting from WAZ carries a quote from Hans-Gerd Bode of Wolfsburg’s board on claims of a Wagner agreement: “That’s not true.”

The denial of an agreement has also been made by Wagner’s agent, both to Bild and WAZ, and Huddersfield are telling their own local media that there’s been no contact from Wolfsburg.

WAZ believe Huddersfield are already in talks with possible successors, despite their denials of contact. Things are expected to further advance on Wednesday, after Wolfsburg play tonight.

The club’s current manager Valérien Ismaël is very much being treated like a dead man walking, but if Wolfsburg were to manage an unlikely away win against Borussia Monchengladbach then things could change quickly.

All eyes glued on Gladbach v Wolfsburg tonight then.
