Jose Mourinho would like to sign Liverpool defender Joel Matip for his defence next season, with Jurgen Klopp happy to let him go.

That’s according to Forza Roma, who say it will be a ‘summer of goodbyes’ for Liverpool and Matip is one of those who could depart.

The website explains that the Reds are ‘willing to sell off’ several players from their current squad and Matip is on the list of option because his contract expires in 2024.

He will not be renewing that deal and has ‘already been given’ Klopp’s approval to leave Anfield if there are suitable offers.

That’s alerted Roma, who see him as a potential repeat of the success they enjoyed when signing Chris Smalling on the cheap from Manchester United.

They feel Matip could be a player who can ‘make the difference’ in Serie A and he is a player who ‘interests’ José Mourinho to boot.

The defender is currently being offered around Italy and his price has dropped to €15m, a figure that Roma, even with limited finances, could afford.

They are first waiting to receive a definitive answer from Evan N’Dicka, who has already spoken to the Italian club and will given them a definitive answer by the end of the month.

However, Matip could be signed alongside him as the club are also facing the prospect of losing three defenders and may need additions.

That could lead to them exploring a deal for the Liverpool defender, who is very much on their radar and seemingly gearing up for a move away from Merseyside this summer.
