Newcastle United are ‘particularly keen’ on Stade Rennais youngster Désiré Doué, who is being courted by several teams in Europe.

That’s according to L’Equipe, who say the ‘interest is real’ from the Magpies after his performances this season ‘caught the eye’.

The newspaper explains that Doué is considered the ‘great prospect’ of the French side, producing fine displays in his 34 appearances this season.

Rennes have him locked down until a deal until 2025 but that does not mean several sides in Europe aren’t watching and thinking about a potential deal and ‘most notably’ Newcastle.

The Magpies will be strengthening Eddie Howe’s squad this summer for a season in the Champions League and have targeted Doué with that in mind. No offer has been made as yet but ‘the interest is real’.

Reports in Spain had indicated that Barcelona were also keen but ‘no contact has been established’ with them or Atlético Madrid, another of his reported suitors. Nor has there been contact with PSG.

Thus, Newcastle have the opportunity to steal a march and potentially get in there ahead of the competition, although they will need to convince Rennes and the player, both of whom want to stay together.

Only a ‘substantial offer’ could change that given the youngster will enter the final year of his deal next year and thus the prospect of getting such a bid again would be slim.
