Following the news from England that Cody Gakpo is shooting for the stars instead of trying to make an intermediate move to the likes of Leeds United, bigger names are being associated with the Dutchman.
After all, Arsenal were among the first to be linked with the PSV Eindhoven star, with their interest in the 23-year-old dating back to January of this year, when people were starting to take notice of his form with the Eredivisie side.
We’ve since seen the likes of Manchester United, and now Tottenham, named; two sides at very different stages of their rebuild, with the former recently welcoming Erik ten Hag as their new manager, while Antonio Conte has been in charge at the London since last season.
The belief was the Red Devils could make a move this summer, which the player was seemingly waiting for, but they decided to throw money at Ajax for Antony instead, leaving Gakpo at PSV until at least January, with a World Cup in between.
Manchester United could still come back for him, while Arsenal and Tottenham could also come forward, and these are the types of clubs that Gianluca Di Marzio believe the forward, who has 13 goals and 11 assists in 18 games so far this season, should be aiming for.
He told Wettfreunde: “I know him very well. He’s a very, very good player. When you play in the Eredivisie with PSV and Ajax, you obviously learn intensity and quality, so the Premier League is the right move for players like him. I think Manchester United, Arsenal or Tottenham.
“Tottenham, I think, need other players like him to have a deeper squad and more managerial choices. One of those teams. It depends on what PSV want for him. I think Manchester United or Arsenal, or Tottenham, for that matter, are the right projects for a quality and intense player like him.
“Of course, it’s still too early to say if there is a deal or if the clubs are talking to each other. We are in October, and there is also a World Cup, so all transfers will be postponed. Each club will wait until the World Cup and see what happens.”
Gakpo has often been labelled as one of the potential stars of the upcoming international competition, which Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham will be following closely, just like every other football fan around the world.
Should the Dutchman excel, that will give PSV even more reason to increase his price, all the while attracting more interest from other clubs, potentially ready to rival the Red Devils, the Gunners or Spurs for his signing.
