Harry Kane and Tottenham is a bit of a strange story; one that started with a decision many at the club didn’t understand, and that was Tim Sherwood’s insistence on keeping the player at White Hart Lane.

Back in early 2014, the former Spurs manager had just taken over from André Villas-Boas and was given the full-time job after a couple of games as interim, and a discussion took place within the club about the now England international.

According to Chris Ramsey, speaking to So Foot in France, Sherwood had to put his foot down about keeping the striker around, as some wanted to see him leave, at least temporarily.

He said: “Some at the club didn’t believe in him, and without Tim’s intervention, Harry probably wouldn’t be at Tottenham anymore.”

For Sherwood, if the club wanted him to stay as manager, it meant keeping Harry Kane around.

The former Tottenham manager explained: “Everything changed around the beginning of 2014. I would never have let him leave while I was in the job. If the board had bought someone more experienced, perhaps more media driven, the fans might have got carried away, but I’m persuaded they wouldn’t have had the same return as what they got with Harry.”

That’s quite the understatement, as, barring the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suarez or Lionel Messi, few players around the world have been as prolific as Harry Kane has been for Tottenham.

Scoring 129 goals in 196 games, the 24-year-old’s return has been phenomenal, especially when you take into account his early days and his inability to find the back of the net in August.

Come on Tottenham fans, all together: “Thank you Tim Sherwood”
