Despite not featuring under Erik ten Hag at Manchester United this season, Facundo Pellistri was still called up by Uruguay to be in their World Cup squad.

It wasn’t a huge surprise, since Diego Alonso, the national team manager, has shown a lot of faith in the 20-year-old, handing him seven caps to date despite his little game time at Old Trafford.

The whole of Uruguay has a lot of hopes in the winger, and there are some who believe he isn’t anywhere near the potential he can reach, with one of those being former footballer Carlos Alberto Aguilera.

The 58-year-old was interviewed as part of a big article about the Manchester United forward on El Observador, who accidentally stumbled across the youngster when he went to take his own son to a game.

He said: “I saw him for the first time in Las Acacias when he was 10 or 11 years old. At that age, he already had technique in speed. Besides, he was good to watch. Do you know how many kicks they gave him? So many. There is a reason why Manchester United bought him.

“Facundo is going to be one of the best players in the world. I have no doubts. He has enormous potential.”

That has yet to be shown at Manchester United, where he hasn’t really been given much of a chance, to be fair.

The winger spent the last two seasons on loan at Alavés in Spain, where he has enjoyed a mixed bag, with his first spell there going far better than his second.

There was a belief he would go back out on a temporary deal this time around, but it wasn’t to be, with Erik ten Hag keeping him around.

Whether that continues to be the case from January onwards, however, remains to be seen.
