Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan has admitted he has no idea what has caused his recent upturn in form.

Gundogan has been in sensational form for City since the middle of December when he opened his account for the season in the 1-1 draw with West Brom.

Since that opening goal, he’s scored eight goals in the subsequent ten games, more than any other player in the same period.

His excellent goalscoring form continued on Sunday, with two goals helping his side to a 4-1 win.

This rich vein of form has been a complete turnaround for the midfielder, who only managed two goals and one assist in 31 games for Manchester City in the Premier League last season.

His change has been of huge benefit to City, who have not missed Kevin de Bruyne thanks to the German’s impressive performances.

The cause of his turnaround, though, remains a mystery, and even the Manchester City man doesn’t know how it’s come about.

“If I’m honest, I can’t explain it to myself 100 per cent,” he told BILD.

“I think it’s a mix of a more offensive role and ever-increasing self-confidence.

“My role in the team has simply shifted a bit, but not necessarily my form. You can also play really well without direct goals and assists.”
