Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Ronny Rosenthal has told Romania’s iAMsport.ro that the arrival of Radu Drăgușin from Genoa last week will help Spurs have better cover for the centre-back position.

Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have been the first-choice centre-back pairing for Ange Postecoglou this season.

The Romania international featured regularly at Genoa and his fine displays for the Serie A side had attracted interest from several clubs. He rejected Bayern Munich’s approach, and interest from other clubs, to join Tottenham.

According to iAMsport.ro, Drăgușin wants to compete with the best players in the Premier League and that convinced him to snub the Bundesliga winners for Spurs.

Rosenthal was asked if it was a ‘wise’ choice from the 21-year-old to pick Tottenham over Bayern. Responding to that, he said it would be difficult for Drăgușin to feature regularly for his new club.

“It’s almost the same to go to Tottenham or Bayern. I always tell young players to make career moves gradually. For him, obviously, it would be better to play matches at Genoa than to sit on the bench at Tottenham,” he said,

“I’m a Tottenham fan, maybe I don’t watch every match, but knowing what defenders are there, I don’t think he’ll start this season unless injuries occur. Personally, it won’t be good for him. It’s good for Tottenham because they will have cover for the two main defenders.”

When pressed further on the benefits for Tottenham and what that means for Drăgușin, he said: “It’s not an ideal situation. It looks like those two will be there next season as well, but there are so many games. He will get chances to play. Then he will have to prove that he deserves to be the starter.”

The Romanian defender made his Tottenham debut when he came off the bench in Spurs’ 2-2 draw against Manchester United on Sunday.
