Manchester City’s defeat at the hands of Manchester United in the EFL Cup on Thursday was Pep Guardiola’s sixth game in a row without a win for the Premier League club, continuing his worst run of form in his managerial career.
Playing a relatively weak side against his rivals, the Spaniard’s team were far from the dominating force that saw off José Mourinho’s side earlier on in the season, and United walked away deserved winners.
Of course, the former Barcelona manager’s progress is being closely followed by the Catalan press, and, of course, by his old employer Joan Laporta.
The former club president, who was in office between 2010 and 2012 and oversaw the famous record of six trophies in one season, has given an interview to Sport in Spain, where he was asked if, one day, he wanted Guardiola to return to Barcelona as manager.
His answer? You can guess it.
He said: “I would like that, yes”.
Since Guardiola’s exit from the club he both played for and managed, many people close to the Spaniard, including his father, have been asked if he would one day return, and their answer has mostly been a strong ‘no’.
However, if Laporta’s plan to one day install Gerard Piqué as club president (he said he would even vote for him) comes to fruition, who knows what Guardiola might do?
