Feyenoord manager Arne Slot has been told he’d be joining a “fantastic club” in Tottenham, but he my be better off staying with the Dutch champions, says Frank de Boer.
The former Netherlands star discussed the manager’s future at Feyenoord today amid consistent talk that he could be on his way this summer.
The Dutch manager has earned himself a glowing reputation in Europe this season after leading Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title with an attractive brand of football despite a lower budget compared to the likes of Ajax and PSV Eindhoven.
That’s seen him linked with a move to the Premier League, where Leeds were keen on him earlier this year, a move he rejected to stay where he was.
Now Tottenham appear to be vying for his signature as they search for a replacement for Antonio Conte, with Slot seemingly moving up the shortlist as the likes of Julian Nagelsmann have been ruled out.
“I would go into the Champions League with Feyenoord,” he said.
“That’s a whole other dimension again. Sometimes people say: ‘A train like that only comes along once and then you have to jump on it.’ Maybe Tottenham is like that, because it’s just a fantastic club.
“Look, the Premier League is the most beautiful league in the world. You really are at a privileged ‘club’ if you get to be one of the 20 managers there.
“In that respect, I can totally understand if he steps in. On the other hand, I think yes, you did a fantastic job and now you can also show it in the Champions League. That would be fantastic.
“I don’t know if it’s about the money. What I just said: there are only 20 managers who can work in the Premier League, which is a unique opportunity. That doesn’t come along very often.
“I think Slot is just a very good trainer. His time will come, you know. In another league, but certainly also in the Premier League.”
