German midfielder Lewis Holtby has revealed his love for Everton and how he came close to joining them before ending up at Tottenham.
Holtby has enjoyed a varied career over the years, turning out for the likes of Schalke, VfL Bochum and Mainz in Germany before a move to Tottenham in 2013.
He only spent a year in London and six months with Spurs before joining Fulham on loan in 2014 and then returning to Germany the following year with Hamburger.
That move was made a permanent one in 2015 before he again returned to England, electing to join Blackburn when he was available on a free transfer in 2019.
He’s since returned to Germany with Holstein Kiel, with a return to England now unlikely given his difficult times with Tottenham and Fulham in particular.
That’s a shame for the midfielder, who has revealed he is a huge Everton fan and actually came close to joining the Goodison Park side before his move to Spurs.
“I came close once – in 2014, but for various reasons, the transfer didn’t happen,” he told SHZ.
“That would have been cool. Everton is my childhood sweetheart, my number one. The club my father and I supported.
“But I had the honour of playing there with Tottenham in my career. That was a great experience.”
