Hertha Berlin chief Fredi Bobic has warned Leeds United they will only get Matheus Cunha if ‘the economic conditions are right’.

Cunha has been regularly linked with a move to Leeds over the last few months, with it believed Marcelo Bielsa is a big fan of the forward.

Their interest was first reported by German newspaper BILD at the beginning of May, with it later reported that they had been following him for months.

It was then reported that they were intensifying their efforts to get him, and the latest report at the end of last month was that Bielsa had specifically asked for his signature.

There has been nothing on the matter since then, with Cunha seemingly just a potential target ahead of what is likely to be a busy summer for those in charge at Elland Road.

In the meantime, Hertha have introduced Bobic as their new director of football, and it seems he has no intention of letting Cunha go easily if Leeds do show genuine interest.

“His advisor was with me; we exchanged ideas. He was on a European tour. It was a good conversation,” he told Kicker.

“I told him that I am very happy that Matheus is with us. He is our best footballer. But he has to change a few things about himself because otherwise, he will have problems in the future, no matter where he plays.

“If he commits himself completely to Hertha, he’s a player we don’t have to worry about. If he wants to move on, then only if the economic conditions are right.

“It’s very simple: either you commit completely and dig in – or you bring something that makes sense.

“I had the feeling that the advisor thought that was great. That was a clear statement; he can deal with that. And it’s not like there are 20 clubs lining up right now.”
