The technical director of AZ has told the Dutch media how he managed to get the best deal for his club when Vincent Janssen signed for Tottenham Hotspur. The Netherlands international signed for the Premier League club after some tough negotiations with the Dutch side.

Speaking to Dutch newspaper AD, Max Huiberts was asked how talks went with Tottenham with regards to the Janssen deal, and his dealings with Daniel Levy.

Huiberts said that he always wants to know from a club how much they are willing pay for player, but revealed Levy didn’t want to give him an answer.

The AZ director believes this isn’t something the Tottenham chief executive has experienced before when trying to sign a player, and thinks their valuation of the Janssen at the start of discussions would have been different.

“I always manage the question: how much do you think he’s worth? Levy longer and longer tried to keep me on the phone and wanted to hear a price. He did not. Something he had never experienced. Eventually everyone was happy, even though I have the feeling that he had gone off from quite a different amount.”

Janssen signed for Tottenham in July for a transfer fee of £17m after the forward agreed to a four-year deal with the North London club. The 22-year-old impressed for AZ last season, finishing the campaign as top scorer in the Eredivisie.
