Angelo Ogbonna has come in for criticism in the Italian media following West Ham United’s defeat to Southampton at the weekend. The Hammers are going through a difficult period, and see themselves currently in the relegation zone.

Calciomarcarto have reported on last weekend’s clash between West Ham and Southampton in which they have singled out Ogbonna for his side’s defeat. They say West Ham are having a poor period, and on Sunday Ogbonna was a reason why they suffered such a loss.

Each week Italian footballers playing outside of Serie A are rated, and some find themselves slated, with Ogbonna this week in the bottom three. Even Italian managers are rated, but not of those could compete with Ogbonna’s poor display, as far as Calciomercato are concerned.

The Italian football outlet said the Italy international neglected his defensive duties by not marking the opposition, and was troubled throughout the game by the Southampton attack. Ogbonna has been branded a flop for his performance, and was given 4/10 for his efforts.

“West Ham is going through a nightmare period. 3-0 against Southampton the former Juventus defender was the author of a disastrous game. Careless in marking and always late, he was constantly troubled by the Saints attack,” said Calciomercato.

Another West Ham player to come in for flak was summer signing Simone Zaza after again failing to score. The forward hasn’t found the net in his first four games, and despite his wiliness to work for the team he receives a 5.5/10.

The Italian has already been linked with a return to Serie A in January, as the rumour mill starts heating up for the winter window.
