Over the past couple of days, the subject of Andreas Christensen’s future at Chelsea has become a prominent story in Germany.

Aware that his loan deal with Borussia Mönchengladbach is expiring at the end of the season, the defender has told the Bundesliga club that if the London side are willing to give him regular first-team football, then he would return to England.

Of course, this has led to many rumours of Antonio Conte ‘not wanting him’, preferring the likes of Leonardo Bonucci for his back-three, and Gladbach aren’t ready to give up just yet.

Speaking to Sport Bild on Wednesday, the German side’s director of football, Max Eberl, explained exactly what their hopes for the Denmark international were.

He said: “I can’t imagine that Chelsea would sell him to us, but maybe we can loan him for another one or two years? If he was with us for three to four whole years, that would be a great story.”

Glacbach are fully aware that, as things stand, Christensen is theirs, and they are ensuring he is in the best environment, perhaps in hope to convince him this is the right club for him to carry on his career.

Eberl continued: “Our pledge is that Andreas feels comfortable with us and always reaches his goals. If Chelsea cannot offer him that, we might have a chance to have him with us even longer.”

Even though they know this fairytale story will eventually come to an end, the Bundesliga side will continue to do what they’ve already excelled at, which is develop him into ‘a world-class player’.

If he returns to Chelsea as that, the London club might need to send them a big box of chocolates, or whatever clubs send each other as thanks. Maybe wine?
