Leicester City defender Jannik Vestergaard has got emotional as he gears up for his 50th appearance for Denmark in this international break.
Avisen cover comments from the 32-year-old in which he admits his next appearance for his country will be an emotional one for him.
The Leicester central defender is expected to make an appearance against Spain on Friday when the two sides meet in the Nations League.
That will take him to 50 in total for his country, with him currently sitting on 49 after making his debut aged 21 all the way back in 2013.
It’s been an interesting journey for him over the 11 years since, playing in two European Championships and the Nations League and spending the World Cup in 2018 sat on the bench.
The lack of an appearance in the world’s biggest international tournament may be somewhat disappointing but it seems Vestergaard is more than happy with what he’s had so far and got emotional thinking of the young boy who once dreamed of playing for his nation.
“It is a milestone which forces me to stop and think about the fact that I will soon have played 50 international matches,” the Leicester man said when asked about the upcoming achievement.
“I can’t help but think of the little boy who often went to the Parken (national stadium) with his father and watched Denmark play with a Dannebrog painted on his face.
“We get carried away by our own careers, and you quickly move on to the next club, the next step or the next match. I think it’s healthy to take a step back and be happy about the road there.
“I was just a little boy from Vesterbro with big dreams. It gives me some pride, because of what I actually get to experience.”
