Fulham allowed Kevin Mbabu to join FC Augsburg on a loan deal last summer and didn’t include an option or obligation to make his stay permanent.
Last month, the defender opened the door to extend his stay with the Bundesliga side, while their sporting director Marinko Jurendic wasn’t sure of his continuity.
There has been development in the German club’s efforts to retain the Fulham man, as per Augsburger Allgemeine.
The Switzerland international has two assists from 24 league games this season and his performances have convinced Augsburg to bet on him again.
Augsburg ‘have been in contact’ with Marco Silva’s side for ‘several months’. It’s further claimed the director has been talking to all parties involved to secure an agreement for the right-back.
“Now we have to see if there is a solution. We’re interested, but we’re not in the driver’s seat,” Jurendic said.
Mbabu’s contract at Fulham lasts until 2025, meaning the summer window will be their last big chance to earn a fee from his sale.
Augsburg could buy the former Newcastle United man, or the Whites can extend his deal and the German club can take him on loan again.
Augsburg right-back Robert Gumny has been sidelined with a serious knee injury since March and, therefore, the need to strengthen the position in the next window is greater.
