Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg has revealed he sees this international break as an opportunity to prove his doubters wrong after a disappointing World Cup in Qatar.

The Spurs midfielder has sat down for an interview with Ekstra Bladet ahead of the international break, during which Denmark will take on Finland and Kazakhstan in UEFA Euro qualifiers.

The fixtures are their first since the World Cup, where they exited at the group stage after three disappointing performances in Group D.

The Danes had been heavily fancied after impressing on the international stage in recent years but the Tottenham star and his teammates were unable to live up to the hype, losing to Australia and France and drawing with Tunisia to exit the tournament early.

That was a major disappointment for them and those who fancied them to go far after their impressive performances at the European Championships.

Höjbjerg is aware of that and, fresh from Tottenham’s disappointing collapse against Southampton over the weekend, is keen to heal some international wounds.

“You could call it a desire for revenge to wipe the slate clean. I think it’s only good because it means something to you,” he told the newspaper.

“For me, it is very much about showing that we are still good. Obviously, the picture painted in Qatar is very different to what we’ve been doing for a long time.

“There are also a lot of new players this time around. That can sometimes help things along. That there may not be so many hangovers from Qatar.”
