After spending 21 years at Anderlecht between 1997 and 2018, Olivier Deschacht decided it was time to try something else and headed out to KSC Lokeren.

A year later, after the club’s descent to the Proximus League, he moved once again, this time to Zulte Waregem, to remain in Belgium’s top tier.

Spending all his career in his home country, Deschacht did get chances to move abroad, but he kept turning them down, hinting at doing so with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Speaking to Sport/Foot Magazine, the centre-back was asked to look back at certain matches he played in, and when talking about a 5-1 win over KV Kortrijk in 2015 when playing for Anderlecht, he explained why he didn’t go to Molineux when he had the chance.

He said: “I always want more, only winning counts. That’s also why I always decided against a transfer for a club in the middle or at the bottom of a great league. I could have won more but what would I have got out of three years at Wolverhampton or Getafe?

“For the same price, I would come back, head down, after a year, because I was on the bench. Here, I was able to fight for a title every year and played in many Champions League campaigns. I deliberately opted for goosebumps, for those amazing moments”.

If he was approached by Wolves in 2015, then you can see why he decided against it if those are his football goals.

Back then, the team was managed by Kenny Jackett and only managed to finish seventh in the Championship, taking another three seasons to make it to the Premier League, needing considerably investment and Nuno Espírito Santo as manager to make it to the top tier.
