The Frenkie de Jong transfer circus continues to roll on.
Earlier this month, Mundo Deportivo reported Tottenham pushed a €50m offer towards Ajax for the youngster. This was after Barcelona were said to have made a €30m bid and seen that rejected.
The €50m from Spurs was to have put the marker down for price.
De Telegraaf had other ideas, with the Dutch newspaper claiming on Monday that Real Madrid are willing to pay €80m for the player.
That seems over the top at this stage, and it’s hard to believe Florentino Perez, who has been cautious with such huge signings in recent years, would go straight to that amount.
De Telegraaf have a close relationship with Ajax, and Tottenham may remember that during the Davinson Sanchez negotiations the newspaper claimed an offer from Real Madrid which was supposed to put pressure on the English club to pay €50m.
It didn’t work, Tottenham kept the original €40m price which had been pushed forward.
Catalan newspaper Sport today reports Tottenham are one of a number of clubs involved in a transfer ‘war’ for De Jong, and this is all hyped up again because of the Dutch claims, which was perhaps the intention.
With Bayern Munich and both Manchester clubs also dragged in, it’s likely Daniel Levy will turn around the tanks and retreat from the transfer ‘war’ unless the Eredivisie club show signs of accepting a more reasonable fee.
Whilst the €80m Real Madrid claim may not be completely true, it’s clear Ajax are trying to push things up to that level and Tottenham won’t be keen to pay such a fee.
