West Ham United have been warned against a potential move for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner in the January transfer window, as he is nowhere near the player he once was.

That’s according to journalist Marcel Reif, who has heavily criticised the striker following his latest disappointing display.

Werner has found himself out of the picture at Leipzig this season, falling down the pecking order and managing 386 minutes of action in all competitions.

That’s led to increased speculation in Germany that he will be moved on in the January window, with numerous reports indicating that Leipzig are more than willing to let him go out on loan somewhere else.

Several sides in the Premier League are believed to be keen on him and West Ham have been named among the suitors since November, when it was explained they were in the picture.

That’s continued since then and a report yesterday again stated that they were eyeing a deal as the striker was considering a ‘change of scenery’.

That would give West Ham their chance at getting him, but Reif has warned it may not be a smart move, as he laid into Werner for his latest disappointing, goalless performance.

“This path to Chelsea was a complete turn into a dead end,” he said.

“He comes in, takes that one shot where he’s really free. The ball doesn’t bounce, there’s nothing unfortunate. A soccer player who has speed, who has the ability to shoot, tries to shoot at goal quite unchallenged – and hits the thing 15 meters over the goal.

“Really completely talentless. I feel sorry for that in my heart. The club that takes him takes Timo Werner 1.0. But if he is now Timo Werner 2.0…”
