On Wednesday, it was explained that Sokratis Papastathopoulos, currently out of the picture at Arsenal, was a target for Genoa in Serie A.
Having already played for the Italian club in the past, the defender wouldn’t need too much adapting to his new environment, and it was claimed a two and a half year contract had already been offered to him.
While an immediate move would still require permission from Arsenal, the fact Mikel Arteta decided to focus on other players for his defence suggests he could be let go on a free six months early if they can get his wages off the books.
Either that or a very small transfer fee.
Already close to moving to Napoli in the summer, the Greece international is currently mulling over the offer in front of him, according to Corriere dello Sport.
The Italian newspaper explain Genoa are currently ‘waiting for the answer’ from the Arsenal defender, with it revealed Sokratis has also been offered the ‘captain’s armband’ alongside his contract.
That’s a bold move by the Serie A club, but it shows just how intent they are on bringing him back.
