Luis Suárez is the only recognised No.9 at Barcelona and the Uruguayan’s contract at Camp Nou runs down in 2021.
The La Liga winners tried to bring in a striker in the summer to provide competition and then become Suárez’s successor at the club, but they failed in their efforts. They are still in the market looking for a replacement.
Journalist Juanfe Sanz told El Chiringuito the Catalan club have identified Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as a target.
La Sexta have provided more details on what Sanz said about the Gabon international. He claims Ernesto Valverde’s are ‘very interested’ in the Gunners attacker and are even considering the option of signing him in winter market.
Aubameyang, 30, will have 18 months left on his Emirates contract in January and the journalist is of the belief the asking price ‘would not be exorbitant’.
Sanz also adds there is a clause in the player’s contract that will allow him to leave Arsenal, if they fail to qualify for the Champions League. That seems unlikely, given the outlay the Gunners made and that qualifying for Europe’s elite competition hasn’t exactly been nailed on for them in recent years.
El Chiringuito can be wild with their claims, and there’s an awful lot to doubt here. Barca can’t just continue spending wildly on attacking additions without letting some players go, they don’t have the required funds, or space, to do so.
