Everton and Southampton are unlikely to face competition from Atlético Madrid if they try to sign striker Moussa Dembele this summer.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who say it is ‘surreal’ to suggest the Frenchman could be a target for the Spanish side.

The newspaper explains that while it is obvious Atlético will be targeting ‘medium/low cost’ strikers in the summer window, Dembele is unlikely to be one of them.

They have been named as potential suitors by reports in England and France, which have claimed they could be competing with Everton and Southampton for his signature.

They’re both keen because Dembele is set to be available on a free when his contract at Lyon comes to an end, but as far as Mundo are concerned it is ‘incredible’ to put Atlético in the mix.

They say it ‘seems difficult’ for that to be possible as, despite the fact he knows the club well, his loan spell there in 19/20 was hardly a successful one.

He may have won the league with the club but he ‘barely had a leading role’ and at no point during that spell did he have the confidence of manager Diego Simeone, barely playing five games and 140 minutes in total.

It would therefore be strange for them to suddenly be keen to sign him on a permanent basis this summer or compete with Everton and Southampton for him.

Mundo, it seems, are dismissing any suggestion that they’ll be in the mix, which we’re sure will come as positive news for the Premier League duo.
