The same old story is back on. A transfer window approaching, Antoine Griezmann looking like he’s definitely leaving Atletico Madrid, and then a new deal tries to keep him at the Spanish side.
That’s what the Madrid club is working on, according to Mundo Deportivo today. The Colchoneros would be trying to execute a plan where they either get more money with the sale, or keep him at the club for longer.
Griezmann’s release clause is dropping from €200m to €100m this summer, and that’s what is reportedly attracting the likes of Barcelona, Manchester United and PSG.
But knowing that he’s worth more than that, Atletico would propose him a deal. First, of course, they’d ask him to stay until the end of this contract, which runs until 2022.
Now there’s also the offer for a new contract, which would put his release clause back to €200m, or even increase it to €300m.
Griezmann is known for helping Atletico when needed, and cancelling his transfer to Manchester United when his club couldn’t sign a replacement would be a proof of that. That’s what gives the club a bit of confidence that he would do it this time too.
Even though Barcelona were said to be leading the race, Mundo Deportivo makes it clear that there have been ‘no contacts’ with the Catalan side. That definitely gives a bigger chance to Manchester United, PSG, or any other club who wants the Frenchman. But first, he must be convinced to leave.
