Last summer, Calvin Bassey left Rangers for Ajax in a €25m move. Michael Beale’s side have conceded slightly more goals per game in the Scottish Premiership since his exit.
Before agreeing a deal with Rangers, the Dutch side had just concluded big sales themselves, and with the need to reinvest in the squad, they went strong for the 23-year-old.
This signing is again being criticised in the Dutch media, with Aad de Mos making strong remarks about it, and specifically on what was paid to Rangers, when speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws (via Voetbalzone).
The pundit claimed that Ajax didn’t act correctly when signing the Rangers player, as they had too much money in their pockets and didn’t think straight about how to spend that.
“For example, they bought Calvin Bassey from Glasgow Rangers for €25m – that is the largest wrong turn in the history of European football; an indictment against Ajax’s youth policy! Then I ask you: Did they scout Bassey with their own eyes?”
Bassey joined Rangers on a free move from Leicester City’s academy in the summer of 2020. In his first season in Glasgow, he mostly stayed on the bench, but then turned into an important piece in Rangers’ defence.
The centre-back is part of a solid system at Ajax, with the club only conceding 28 goals in 27 games in the Eredivisie, but it seems his performances haven’t impressed those who follow the club from close.
