Sergio Agüero can join another club on a free transfer in the summer if he decides against signing a new deal at Manchester City.

On February 4th, we relayed news from Spain that the 32-year-old would be ‘delighted to play’ for Barcelona.

The Catalan club’s interest in the forward is not new as they tried to sign the Citizens star before taking Luis Suárez from Liverpool in 2014. This was reported by Mundo Deportivo last month.

Andoni Zubizarreta was the sporting director at the Camp Nou when the La Liga side took the Uruguayan.

According to SER Catalunya, Agüero was then the main target for the Spanish giants, but the ‘frustrated incorporation’ of the Argentine saw Barcelona end up taking the former Reds striker.

The ex-Marseille chief has given an interview to SER Catalunya, and explained there was no ‘unanimity’ at Barca over Suárez, after their failure to land the City player.

“His arrival, after the previous bite [incident at the 2014 World Cup], it wasn’t easy, people told me that he didn’t have Barca’s DNA, that he didn’t have mobility. In the end, with his work and quality, he integrated into the team’s game and with Leo and Neymar,” Zubizarreta said.

Suárez impressed during his time at Barcelona before he was sold to Atlético Madrid last summer. He’s been in fine form for Los Rojiblancos this season, scoring 16 goals in La Liga.

Having been left ‘frustrated’ in their efforts to sign Agüero in the past, the Blaugrana will have another opportunity to take him in the summer, if the attacker comes to the end of his time with Manchester City.
