Borussia Monchengladbach are keeping a close eye on how Leeds United perform between now and the end of the season, with it key to their hopes of signing Maximilian Wöber permanently.
That’s according to Gladbach Live, who cover the player today and how it will all depend on whether Leeds can make it back to the Premier League.
Wöber has been a key player since arriving on loan from Leeds in the summer and the German side are keen to sign him permanently, although how much they will need to pay remains to be seen.
Leeds paid €12m for him in January 2023 and there’s a belief a similar figure will be needed this summer, which would make him “king transfer potential” for the Germans.
They’ve been closing the gap on the top two in the Championship with a superb run of form that’s seen them go 11 games unbeaten, making an automatic promotion spot very much attainable.
Wöber has already made it clear he is keeping an eye on the situation, having only left in the summer as he’d been told by Austria boss Ralf Rangnick that he needed to be playing in a top league to make it into his Euro 2024 squad.
Thus, he moved to the Bundesliga but if Leeds secure promotion, he would seemingly be open to playing at Elland Road once again.
Promotion back to the top flight would also mean Leeds don’t need a fire-sale in the summer to help balance the books, thus no need to sell Wöber. It would be the opposite if they were to remain in the Championship, on both counts.
So those in charge of Borussia Monchengladbach ‘will keep looking’ at Leeds and ‘assessing the conditions’ for the negotiations for Wöber.
Basically, the better Leeds perform, the higher the probability of a return for the defender, particularly as Gladbach don’t have a purchase option in his current loan deal.
